Nicholas comemora o seu 40º aniversário na sua casa de campo algures no Alentejo, com Sara sua mulher há 8 anos, na companhia de dois casais amigos e uma jovem e sensual actriz, Raquel. Nicholas tem tudo o que sempre desejou e vive uma vida desafogada.Durante a noite do seu aniversário, descobriremos as profissões, os segredos, as paixões, os vícios, as traições e as ambições de cada um dos nossos personagens. Eis que, quando menos se espera, Nicholas surge morto à superfície da piscina. Nesse momento Nicholas assume o controlo do filme, o controlo que nunca teve na sua vida, e em VOZ OFF coloca-se uma questão:
- E se há 10 anos atrás, quando fui a Itália participar numa convenção e onde conhecera Cláudia, por quem me apaixonara completamente, tivesse optado por ter ficado a viver com ela?
- Será que teria seguido a mesma profissão? Viveria em Portugal? Teria filhos? Viveria de forma abastada?
Estaria vivo?
A partir deste momento, iremos assistir a duas versões da história desta vida:
Uma onde Nicholas jaz morto na piscina e a polícia irá desvendar o mistério da sua morte, trazendo à verdade as traições, os segredos, as mentiras, as verdades de todos os personagens e se descobre a natureza da morte de Nicholas;
Outra onde vemos Nicholas, noutro país, noutra vida, com outra mulher e com filhos, outra actividade, outro comportamento, mas o mesmo aniversário.
Será o destino capaz de ser igual tanto numa história como na outra?
Por um lado, um filme policial onde o espectador é o detective, simultaneamente um drama de conflitos interiores, sobre as decisões que tomamos em bifurcações da nossa vida e que mudam radicalmente o percurso da nossa existência.
É um filme sobre a inevitabilidade da morte como única certeza de destino!
É uma reflexão que nos faz pensar em viver na utopia de procurar a felicidade.
Nicholas is celebrating his 40th birthday in his country house somewhere in Alentejo, with Sara, his wife of the last 8 years, two couples of friends and a young and sensual actress, Raquel. Nicholas has everything he ever wished for and is well off.During the evening of his birthday, we shall discover the professions, secrets, passions, vices, treasons and ambitions of each one of our characters.Suddenly, and when least expected, Nicholas appears dead on the surface of the pool.At that moment Nicholas takes control of the film, the control he never had during his life, and in Voice Over, a question is put to the audience:
And if 10 years ago, when I went to Italy and met Claudia, with whom I fell passionately in love, I had chosen to stay and live with her?
Would I have followed the same profession?
Would I be living in Portugal? Would I have
Children? Would I still be wealthy?
Would I be alive?
From this moment onwards, we will be watching two versions of Nicholas’ life:
One, in which he lies dead in the pool and the police will solve the mystery surrounding his death, bringing to light the treasons, the secrets, the lies, the truths of all the characters, and thus revealing the nature of Nicholas’ death;
Another version, in which we see Nicholas in another country, living an alternate life with another wife, with children, a different job and a different attitude towards life, but on the same birthday.
Could fate turn out to be the same in both stories?
On one hand, this film is a thriller in which the spectator is the detective, on the other hand it is a drama of internal conflicts, about the decisions we make at the crossroads of our lives, which radically change the course of our existence.
It is a film about the inevitability of death as fate’s only certainty!
It is a reflection on the utopian pursuit of happiness.
