An Outpost of Progress is an adaptation of Joseph Conrad’s story "An Outpost of Progress".
At the end of the 19th century, two Portuguese bureaucrats, imbued with a vague intent to civilise and a strong desire to make money through the ivory trade, reach the River Congo. They start work at a small branch of the "Portuguese Congo" trading company, lost in the heart of the tropical forest.
Isolated and under the constant effect of illness and drugs, they experience a permanent state of ecstasy which opens them up to a parallel reality: the world of the dead. Gradually, an emotional bond begins to form between them and the Africans. But the tropical mist nurtures feelings of mutual distrust and incomprehension.
